Special Education Teacher - International Independent School

German language skills preferred

The German International School Sydney (GISS) is currently seeking an experienced, committed and passionate Special Education Teacher (Year 5 – 12) to join our Educational Support Services Team at the start of Term 2 in 2018.

The GISS is a small international school offering a bilingual education programme (German and English). It is registered by the NESA and accredited by the Federal Republic of Germany as a German School Abroad which offer tuition from Kindergarten to the bilingual IB-Diploma.

The school is a highly reputable co-educational school that caters for students from Preschool to Year 12. The school has a rich history of quality education and aims to provide an enjoyable work place for its staff.

  • An appropriate tertiary teacher qualification
  • The ability to work collaboratively with staff and parents.

Key descriptors and skills:

  • Post graduate qualification in Special Education and substantial experience in teaching students with disability and additional learning needs
  • Depth of knowledge, understanding and experience working with students with Autism Spectrum Disorder, ADHD/ADD, challenging behaviour and Gifted Students
  • Demonstrated effectiveness and experience as a teacher for secondary students
  • Being a team player and contribute to a multi-disciplinary team
  • Ability to support classroom teachers, meeting the diverse learning needs of identified students through planning and team teaching in a collaborative way
  • Provide direct and indirect instructional support to students in a positive learning environment
  • Employ special educational strategies and techniques during instruction to improve the development of social-emotional skills, language, cognition, and behaviour
  • Experience in developing support documentation, effective IEP's and differentiated learning programs
  • Develop plans for communication, monitoring, and follow-up of students in the inclusive classroom setting
  • Experience in administering and interpreting a range of diagnostic assessments
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills with an ability to communicate effectively and sensitively with parents, students, specialists and colleagues
  • Demonstrate strong skills in partnering with families
  • Commitment to cooperate and communicate with external specialists such as psychologists, OT's, SLP's on a regular basis
  • A commitment to meeting the social and emotional wellbeing needs of the students
  • Maintain professional competence by participating in staff development activities, curriculum development meetings, and other professional opportunities
  • Being committed to meeting the needs of a diverse student population in a bilingual learning environment
  • Embracing the culture of a multilingual community in an inclusive, non-selective school
