Secondary Coordinator (Years 7-12) including IB Coordination
Reports to: Secondary Head / Principal
Duties and Responsibilities:
1. Learner Profile:
- Actively promote the attributes of the IB Learner Profile among students through specific programs, events, and initiatives that encourage inquiry, reflection, and personal growth within the GISS community
2. Coordination of IB Program (Years 11-12):
- Oversee the management and delivery of the IB program, including the organization of IB-specific events such as exam management, CAS projects, and Theory of Knowledge (ToK) workshops.
- Monitor academic performance and identify support opportunities for students requiring additional assistance, ensuring that all learners reach their full potential.
- Communicate with the IB organisation regarding audits and evaluations, ensuring compliance and addressing any feedback appropriately.
- Provide academic and pastoral support to IB students while facilitating professional development for IB teaching staff, ensuring alignment with IB standards.
- Collaborate with the Secondary Head to integrate IB strategies into the school’s broader educational framework.
3. Secondary I Coordination (Years 7-10):
- Coordinate faculty meetings and curriculum discussions for Years 7-10, implementing practical support strategies for teachers, such as classroom observations, feedback sessions, and collaborative planning.
- Promote student engagement and well-being through tailored strategies that acknowledge the diverse needs of this age group.
- Ensure scope and sequence accuracy across all subjects and monitor compliance with GISS assessment policies, offering guidance to teachers.
4. Curriculum Coordination (Years 7-12):
- Align and oversee curriculum continuity from Secondary I (Years 7-10) through Secondary II (Years 11-12, IB), conducting regular reviews and updates based on educational trends or requirements from GISS and the IB.
- Foster innovative teaching practices and promote technological advancements in education, encouraging the integration of digital methodologies in the curriculum.
- Collaborate with the Primary Coordinator to facilitate the transition from Year 6 to Year 7, ensuring students are well-prepared for their secondary education journey.
5. Communication and Collaboration:
- Act as a liaison for parents, staff, and the IB organization regarding academic matters, resolving conflicts as they arise among students, teachers, and parents concerning these issues.
- Work with the Primary Coordinator to align policies and strategies for a cohesive “One School” approach, ensuring consistency across educational levels.
- Facilitate regular updates to staff, students, and parents on curriculum and policy changes, ensuring transparency and open lines of communication.
- Maintain relationships with other IB schools, particularly German international schools, to promote resource-sharing and collaboration.
6. Professional Development:
- Identify training needs and organize professional learning opportunities for Secondary staff, focusing on areas such as differentiation, technology integration, and STEM education.
- Support teachers through classroom observations and mentoring sessions, reviewing the effectiveness of professional development initiatives through feedback and follow-up practices.
7. General Responsibilities:
- Ensure compliance with inspection standards and support the implementation of GISS policies, fostering a culture of accountability and excellence.
- Promote diversity and inclusion within the curriculum and school environment, ensuring that all voices are heard and valued.
- Monitor the mental well-being of both teachers and students, providing appropriate support systems and resources to promote a healthy school climate.
- Foster a collaborative environment, encouraging teamwork across departments and year levels, and enhancing the overall educational experience for all students.
8. Quality Assurance and Evaluation:
- Regularly assess and evaluate the effectiveness of teaching methodologies, curriculum delivery, and program implementation to ensure high educational standards are maintained.
- Collect and analyse feedback from students, parents, and staff to inform continuous improvement initiatives within the Secondary education framework.
- Collaborate with instructional leaders and faculty to develop action plans aimed at addressing areas of concern and enhancing the overall learning experience.
9. Strategic Planning:
- Participate in strategic planning processes related to curriculum innovation and development, ensuring alignment with the school's mission, vision, and IB principles.
- Contribute to the development of long-term goals and objectives for the Secondary division, supporting initiatives that foster academic excellence and student engagement.
- Facilitate discussions around resource allocation and identification of necessary materials and support systems to enhance teaching and learning.
10. Leadership and Advocacy:
- Serve as an advocate for the Secondary student body and teaching staff, ensuring their voices and needs are represented in administrative discussions and decision-making processes.
- Inspire and motivate faculty to embrace change, implement best practices, and collaborate on interdisciplinary projects that foster a dynamic learning environment.
- Lead by example, demonstrating a commitment to professional growth, reflective practice, and the values of the IB mission.
11. Community Engagement:
- Engage with the broader GISS community, creating partnerships with local organisations and stakeholders to enhance educational opportunities and resources for students.
- Promote events that showcase student achievements and learning, encouraging parental and community involvement in the educational process.
- Develop outreach programs that facilitate connections between the school and the local community, enriching the student experience and fostering a sense of belonging.
12. Additional Responsibilities:
- Participate in relevant training sessions, workshops, and professional networks to stay updated with the latest educational practices, IB trends, and pedagogical innovations.
- Actively seek opportunities for collaboration with other IB coordinators and educational leaders locally and internationally to share best practices and resources.
- Manage special projects and initiatives related to IB or curriculum development, contributing to the overall progression of the educational offerings at GISS.
Qualifications and Skills:
- A Bachelor’s degree in Education or a related field (Master’s degree preferred).
- Previous experience in an IB environment or relevant leadership role within secondary education.
- Strong understanding of the IB framework, curriculum design, and assessment practices.
- Excellent communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills, with the ability to foster positive relationships within the school community.
- Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion in educational practices.
