Technology at GISS

Technology has become a part of our every day lives; it brings together tools that promote development, collaboration, and information exchange. The German International School Sydney understands that students need to be equipped with the knowledge and skills to utilise technology effectively and safely in the modern world, and we aim to strike a balance between traditional teaching methods and embracing current and emerging technologies.

Students are taught a range of skills such as word processing, presenting, movie making, coding, blogging and animation along with fundamental competences such as cyber safety and how to use technology ethically and effectively. We have made significant investment in many areas of technology including infrastructure, hardware, software and staff training. Our resources and learning programme are overseen by our Digital Transformation Manager.

During their time at GISS, students have the opportunity to engage, create and collaborate with others through powerful tools and services that are designed to integrate with our learning program.

  • Kindy and Stage 1 use Seesaw as a digital learning space using school owned, dedicated student iPads. GISS uses a Mobile Device Management solution (JAMF) to install applications and set restrictions to safeguard the online safety of students.
  • All students in Stages 2 and 3 have access to school owned student laptops loaded with the Microsoft Suite of educational tools.
  • Stages 4, 5 and 6 enjoy the freedom of choice through our BYOD program, and access learning resources on their own devices using our comprehensive network and connectivity.

GISS' BYOD program

GISS has partnered with JB HiFi to offer high end devices at educational prices. Have a look at the recommended options here by using the schools code GSJGBYOD.

Network

Our school’s network is fast, reliable and secure and is protected using Sophos Web Filtering System. All students are allocated a Microsoft license which gives them access to the full range of Microsoft Educational products such as Word, Excel, Outlook, Teams and OneNote.

Whilst we aim to keep all of our staff and students safe in an online environment, we do ask that parents help to share the responsibility of educating their children to be safe, considerate users of technology as they collaborate within our school community and beyond. The Australian Government has created an online portal where parents can access help and information about eSafety for their children.
